United and Strong and the Eastern Caribbean hub of the Caribbean Forum for Liberation and Acceptance of Genders and Sexualities (CariFLAGS) will be among the One Billion Rising for Justice in 2014. Coordinated locally for the second year by PROSAF (Positive Reactions Over Secrets and Fear), One Billion Rising is a one day event highlighting long-term efforts to secure justice for women survivors of violence.
U&S and CariFLAGS EC Hub will also contribute to a critical petition by One Billion Rising Caribbeans. OBR 2014 is asking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Leaders to change marital rape laws and build more shelters for survivors of domestic & sexual violence in the Caribbean.
The petition notes that Violence Against Women (VAW) remains one of the most pervasive global human rights issues of our of our time. According to the World Health Organization, 35% of women worldwide have experienced gender-based violence in their lifetimes (2013). These human rights violations also run rampant throughout the Caribbean. One in three women in the Caribbean will experience Domestic Violence and “all Caribbean countries (where comparable data is available) have higher than the global average for rape” (United Nations, Ending Violence Against Women). In response, OBR began as a global movement to end violence against women and girls in 2013, and in 2014 a united Caribbean will join One Billion Rising for Justice, calling on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to address VAW in two distinct yet interrelated ways.
The petition will be widely disseminated with a call to the community to add their signatures to urge CARICOM leaders to action. Everyone is encouraged to sign the petition hosted on change.org at https://www.change.org/petitions/caribbean-community-caricom-leaders-change-marital-rape-laws-and-build-more-shelters-for-survivors-of-domestic-sexual-violence-in-the-caribbean.
