United and Strong Inc Saint Lucia invites applications from advocates for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women working in the Caribbean, to attend the third annual Caribbean Women and Sexual Diversity Conference. The 3rd CWSDC will be held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from 5th – 10th October, 2015, in collaboration with WOMANTRA and CariFLAGS.
As LBT women issues are recognised as integral in human rights advocacy, the Caribbean Women and Sexual Diversity Conference will further address these, build leadership skills of LBT women and engage in strategic planning to develop their advocacy. Participants will benefit from extensive opportunities to develop networks and collaboration.
The CWSDC was previously hosted in Curacao and Suriname. You can read about it here:
Our participants have been expressive with their reviews of the two CWSDCs:
Ulelli Verbeke of SASOD Guyana captured the 2nd CWSDC in brilliant images here: Photos of 2nd CWSDC
She also writes of the first conference, “It all was a very edifying experience for me”. Read her reflections here:
For Latoya Nugent of J-Flag there were “intellectually exotic moments and orgasmic inspiration” that opened her eyes “to a Caribbean world of powerful, resilient, inspirational, innovative women”. Read Latoya’s full article.
Our funding partners have also been expressive their support. Among those writing about the CWSDC are Astraea (Read their report here) and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (Read the piece here).
The 2015 Caribbean Women and Sexual Diversity Conference will bring facilitators from diverse backgrounds to guide participants in an exploration of:
- Gender and sexuality
- LBT women’s rights
- Violence and security
- Sexual and reproductive health and rights
- Communication skills including mainstream and social media
- Grassroots and community mobilising
- Proposal writing and fundraising
Under the theme “Actioning Women’s Leadership“, this CWSDC will build on the work of the previous conferences that sought to raise awareness of the possibility of an LBT women’s movement and begin the process of coalescing the efforts of activists around the region.
Application deadline for scholarships to attend the 2015 CWSDC is 04 September, 2015.
